Lately I've been doing a decent amount of work on dreaded self-promotion. I hate trying to sell myself and my jewelry, but do know it's a needed thing. I typically use some of the most common social media networks as my promotion venues. I'm on Twitter, Facebook, and a number of Nings, including one for copper wire jewelry and a few that are fine art related. While doing so, I've been lucky enough to run across a few giveaways/contests and so have been fun playing with those. I've also been very surprised by winning a few of those giveaways!
I won admittance to a portrait class with Tam of Willowing.ning.com - Tam ran a giveaway in celebration of the 1000th member of her Ning, and I won! Here's an example of what I am learning in the course:
This portrait is done with Caran D'Ache Neocolor II watersoluable crayons, acrylic paint, graphite pencil, watercolor pencil, and Derwent Graphitint pencils. I think that I'll end up working her into a background of some sort, but not sure yet!
On Facebook, one of the artists I'm a fan of, Jodi Ohl of Sweet Repeats Studio, asked what color combinations currently inspired us. I'm loving turquoise, lilac and orange sherbert right now, and apparently Jodi likes it too because I won a gift certificate to her Etsy shop for my answer! I was extremely surprised, and am now trying to decide what I'd like to have hanging on the walls of my office/studio as inspiration.
So, the lesson I've learned is that while doing self promotion, do a little bit extra and enter some giveaways, you might be pleasantly surprised when you win something!
