Wishcasting Wednesday

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
     -Mary Oliver

Today's Wishcasting Wednesday asks us what the soft animal of our body wishes for.  Based upon this poem by Mary Oliver, specifically the line "You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.", following another thought-provoking post in which Jamie asks us to join the "soft animal movement", we are to look inward and see what that soft animal is wishing for.  Intense - but then, what of Jamie's wish requests aren't?

And so, here I reveal what my soft animal is wishing and longing for...the feel of a horse's soft mane, the unihibited laughter of a 2 year old, the flash of brilliance in moonstone, the warm brush of happy-dog breath, the crisp pages of a good book, the smell of puppy frito-feet, soft pillows, warm cozy slippers, the tattered edges of a well-worn blanket, a soft pile of kitten on the lap, the early morning hugs and sloppy kisses of my little ones, the feeling of contentment and "I belong here" when in my husband's arms, the sense of strength and fearlessness found on the back of a horse.

And she knows that she will have what she wishes for.  Eventually.

Thank you, Jamie, for another touching wish.
