a bit of a change,
but not really

So, my friends, you might have noticed a bit of a change up in my blog banner up there.  Just a touch of a change, though.  Really, it's not as drastic as it seems.  Let me explain, please.  And bear with me, because I'm sure I'll ramble a tad.  (Uhm, you are saying, what's different about that?  Yeah, well, nothing really...but bear with me, please ;)

Anyway, you might remember from my earlier post where I revealed that my word for 2011 was Reach.  I choose Reach in part because of the inherent sense of movement that Reach embodies. Without movement, without reaching, we become stagnant.  I don't want to be stagnant.  I want to push myself to exploring new areas, new techniques, new materials.  I want to learn.  I want to experiment.  And so I'm trying....

Yes, you've seen these before - but one of the new things I'm trying and enjoying is torch fired enamels.  Enjoying immensely.  So much so that I just ordered more enamels and other tools to play with!

And in my trying, I've come back to something that I hadn't played with in, literally, about 15 years.  I've alluded to it in a few other posts, but haven't really felt comfortable sharing in more than a quick peek type of way.  I'm hoping to reach a bit with this, as it is my plan to start trying to share a bit more of my creativity here by sharing some of the other mixed media I play around with. What I mean is that when I create something like the piece below I'm working from a place deep inside that is very personal and emotional...those inner most workings are sometimes a bit hard to put out there!

"Family" a mixed media piece done for my mother.
Techniques used range from those in Kelly Rae Robert's book "Taking Flight" to some taken from the magazine Somerset Apprentice and more from online classes I've taken with Connieand Sharon and Suzi and Julie and and and.  (I think I have an addiction to online classes!)

Another key component to reaching is to grab for things that I'm not quite ready to reach for, but for some reason that thing keeps showing itself up as an opportunity ready for the taking.  I've had a few of those moments lately, and I'm trying, really, to grasp those opportunities as they show themselves.

I know I'm being pretty cryptic here, but please excuse me for that ;)  You'll see one or two of the things I'm talking about in the near future.  I'm happy dancing about these opportunities right now, but can't reveal much about them until it's more timely!

Anyway, so I just wanted to quickly explain why I've played a bit with my banner above.  Mostly, this blog has been about my journey with creating my own jewelry.  It will continue to be so.  However, you might notice a few more posts on other creative ventures I'm exploring.  As such, I thought perhaps an update was in order for the blog header - to be a bit more comprehensive.  But just a bit of an update...things won't really change ;)

Thanks so much for sharing this post Holly. I know it is hard to put the emotions out there sometimes, and I just want you to know that you have a ton of support coming at you from Arizona! I love the piece you did for your mom, and I can't wait to see more of your "reach".

:) Molly

Love the mixed media piece - the texture, the colours, the message. Wonderful!
Thank you for sharing yourself!
