The Challenge of Music
blog hop

Normally, when it comes to a challenge or blog hop I have a tendency to be very verbose.  Not today.  Erin Prais-Hintz's awesome idea to challenge us to create something based on a specific song really drew me in from the first moment.  I've struggled with coming up with something to say that will properly introduce the song I've chosen, and the reasoning behind it.  It's just not happening, though.  I guess it simply shows how powerfully music affects a person.  I know it does me.  Especially this particular song.  So this time around, I'm going to simply let the music speak for itself.

This is a group that I've just found, The Strange Familiar.  Their song, Courage Is..., touches an emotional core that I try to avoid reaching with any regularity.  It intensely moves me.  And I hope the necklace I've created shows how intensely the song affects me.

The pendant is simple and rustic.  It's a copper tag that I cut out, hammered for texture, stamped with "Courage Is" as reminder to myself, and then partially enameled.

The necklace features dark blue freshwater pearls and white freshwater pearls that were wire wrapped.  Copper chain and a handmade clasp complete the necklace.

What I was thinking while creating this piece was that courage is such an overused, but seldom completely understood word.  Courage is something that we all need, and can show itself in so many different ways.  I truly hope this necklace portrays what the song was trying to convey.  If it does, I'll be content.

Thank you, Erin, for organizing this challenge.  Music touches so many people.  Thank you for letting us show how it affects us.

Please join everyone who's participating in this awesome challenge!
I know that everyone's worked extremely hard on this...it seems to have struck a chord with so many  :)

I actually have chills listening to this music! Your pendant really moves me. I love that the rest of the story is hidden by the enamel, that courage is... to everyone something different. Just like in the song. This is a powerful piece of jewelry, a powerful song with a powerful message. It reminds me that you never know how your life will touch another and that I need to continue to send out positive vibes to the universe for the same to come back to me, like ripples in a pond. Thank you so much for participating in this challenge with me! I feel that I know you a little better for sharing this music with you.
Enjoy the day!

I never heard that song before, but I see why you love it. Its wonderful. Your piece is great. I think the enamel- in white- over the beat up copper speaks volumes to the song. The white is like a bright light, covering the dark and beaten metal, that still shows through. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Very powerful and something wonderful to think about, courage. I am loving finding new artists with this hop. Your piece is powerful. (if jewelry can be powerful.)

I had heard somewhere that courage isn't the lack of fear it just means something else is more important. You are right that it is misused but I will say that your necklace is a truly inspiring reminder

That was beautiful, Holly- I had never heard that song before! I love your piece- that focal is beautiful. For me, the pure white snow enamel really echoes your sentiment of "Courage is..." because Courage gets us through everything life throws our way... and it is beautiful, just like that pure, white snow. Thank for this, Holly- xoxo

I am totally blown away by this entire post, the song (which I'd never heard before now), and the piece you made to capture the song. Holly, You did an AMAZING job with this piece. The copper/enameled focal is stunning and the whole design is fantastic. Love it.

Courage is...something different to everyone. Courage is...underneath. This pendant is so powerful, just like the song. What a beautiful choice. I have never heard of the band before but I will look up some more of their music. I would wear this all the time, as a reminder of all that has come before this moment and all that will come after. Just gorgeous, Holly!

You chose a very nice song - full of heart and soul. I love the necklace and how positive the message of the pendant is: Courage. All of us need that.

I... I am touched by this piece. I can see why it is something that is hard to be felt everyday and yet... is something we all need to feel sometimes. We can't understand ourselves without it? Thank you, Holly, your piece is so amazing and I feel like you have shared a big piece of yourself. <3 <3

I love the hammered and enamel focal. Its raw and lovely at the same time.

Your partially enameled and hammered pendant is amazing! It goes so well with the pearls.

Courage really is a misunderstood word. I think Neil Gaiman said it best when he said that it's not about being fearless, but about doing what needs to be done even though you're afraid. I'm paraphrasing, here. ;)

Just gorgeous. I love your pendant. It really captures the song beautifully.
